James Kellett

Aspiring sports journalist

Back

This week, we’re catching up with James Kellett, a former student who is now an aspiring sports journalist, currently completing an (NCTJ) at News Associates in Manchester.

James joined Winstanley College in 2018 after attending St. Bede’s Roman Catholic High School in Ormskirk. During his time at College, he pursued Media Studies, Modern History, and Economics, preparing him for his future career in journalism. Alongside his studies, he made the most of Winstanley’s enrichment opportunities, playing for the College’s 11-a-side football team and contributing to Winstanley TV, where he gained valuable media experience.

After leaving College in 2020, James progressed to Newcastle University, where he graduated with a first-class degree in Media, Communications, and Cultural Studies. While at university, he immersed himself in student life, writing for Student Media as the Gaming Sub-Editor, managing the History Society’s Intramural Football Team, and supporting others as a Peer Mentor.

Now, James is completing a journalism industry qualification (NCTJ) at News Associates in Manchester, furthering his expertise in the field. Looking ahead, he aspires to be a sports journalist, writing engaging sports content and breaking sports news for a national audience.

For students considering following in his footsteps, James emphasises the importance of networking, he says: “I wish I had started earlier, but the more you do it, the easier and more beneficial it becomes.” He also encourages students to embrace every opportunity, adding, “Some days, you may feel like the work you’re doing is pointless, but a lot of the time, it’s what you make of it.”

Thank you to James for getting gin touch. We can’t wait to see him achieve his goals in the sports journalism world!
