This week we catch up with former student and now practising dentist, Laura Smith, who recently returned to College for Progression Day. Laura, a former Fred Longworth High School pupil, studied at Winstanley between 2017 and 2019, taking A-levels in Biology, Chemistry and Psychology.
Laura says: ‘I developed a keen interest in the sciences at high school. I was always fascinated by biology and the complexities of the human body, which led me to pursue A-levels in Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology at College. Winstanley was a vibrant and supportive environment that really nurtured my academic interests and helped shape my career aspirations.
During my time at Winstanley, I found my passion for dentistry, whilst taking part in the College’s preparatory MDV programme. It was challenging but the encouragement from my teachers gave me the confidence to apply to universities that would further my ambition.
In 2019, I started my undergraduate studies in Dentistry at Birmingham University. Those years were transformative. The hands-on experience and the theoretical knowledge I gained were invaluable. Birmingham provided a solid foundation in general dentistry, and it was there that I discovered my passion for cosmetic dentistry. I was captivated by the blend of science and artistry involved in creating beautiful smiles and boosting patients’ confidence.
I am about to pursue a Dentistry Foundation Year at Newcastle University which will allow me to delve deeper into advanced techniques and procedures. I will be working in both private practice and at the dental hospital while in Newcastle, gaining diverse experience and honing my skills.
To current and future students at Winstanley, my advice is to embrace the challenges: the experiences and knowledge you gain now will pave the way for your career. Also don’t be put off by rejections, I don’t know anyone who got offers from all the universities they applied to. Once at university enjoy the clinical stages and take advice from the clinicians who have a wealth of experience to share with you.’
