This week we catch up with Hannah Simpson, a former student who completed her studies at Winstanley in 2020.
Hannah, a former Culcheth High pupil, is now a Costa Junior Development Executive at Samworth Brothers. She kindly shared her story with us:
‘I took A-levels in Biology, Chemistry and Physical Education at Winsntaley before progressing onto a degree apprenticeship in Food Science and Technical at Samworth Brothers, a British food manufacturer, who produce a variety of chilled and ambient foods, including both private-label and branded products.
The degree I obtained as part of the apprenticeship was a BSc in Food Science and Technology from Sheffield Hallam University and my apprenticeship included three years of work experience in the form of placements within the Samworth Brothers Group:
Year 1 – Technical Systems Technologist at Saladworks (Ready Meals Division)
Year 2 – Food Safety Technologist at Group Technical (Encompasses overseeing all twelve food manufacturing sites within the group including categories such as ready meals, sandwiches, and food to go, savoury pastry, deli meats and sausage and vegan proteins)
Year 3 – Process Technologist (6 Months) Hygienic Projects (6 Months) at Saladworks
I am currently employed as a member of the Samworth Brothers Food To Go team and I’m immersed in a placement within the Costa UK Fresh Food Team. In this role, I contribute to the success of Product Developers in the Fresh – Savoury category by managing product briefs and projects. My responsibilities include competitor benchmarking, engaging in hands-on exploration of new food and store propositions, and providing insightful feedback to the team.
I aspire to establish my own food business, specialising in offering healthy fast-food options. This will prioritise nutrition, aiming to contribute meaningfully to the ongoing battle against obesity.
To students considering a similar career pathway, I would say, it's never too early to begin contemplating your future, post-education. Explore the degrees that attract your interest and tailor your subject choices to align with the knowledge that will best support your desired degree.
Apprenticeships offer an excellent avenue to acquire experience within the food industry. By combining hands-on experience with theoretical learning, you develop a more comprehensive understanding of the intricacies of the food industry, positioning yourself ahead of your peers.’
