When choosing from our large collection of course combinations, it can be difficult to narrow your options down to just three. If you already have a particular career in mind, though, this can be a much simpler task! Proof of this is former Culcheth High and Winstanley College student Joseph Kindley, who was interested in a career in the legal sector.
Since completing his A levels, Joseph has gone on to obtain both an undergraduate and postgraduate degree in Law, as well as completing the Legal Practicing Course (LPC). He is now in the process of completing his training contact and is well on his way to becoming a Criminal Solicitor!
Joseph attended Winstanley from 2014 to 2016 and studied Law, History, Media, and Sociology. He was always interested in a career in Law but notes that it wasn’t until he began to study the subject with tutor Jacqui that he felt confident enough to pursue it. Joseph said:
‘My law teacher Jacqui had a lot of faith in me and really ignited my passion in law, especially criminal law.’
Although Joseph was particularly invested in his study of Law, he also enjoyed the variety of his subjects, and the opportunities they offered. For instance, Joseph attended a trip to Italy with History, where he was lucky enough to visit Pompeii and Rome! Joseph also became involved with Winstanley Extra, playing for the college football team.
After completing his A levels, Joseph went on to study Law at Leeds Beckett University. He graduated with a 2:1, and then went on to study his master’s in Law (with LPC) at the University of Law. Whilst at university, Joseph worked as a clerk for Park Square Barristers. He then went on to work for international firm Clyde and Co as an Intelligence Analyst whilst completing his masters. More recently, Joseph has started his training contract with a criminal law practice in Liverpool. Upon completion of this, Joseph will be a fully qualified solicitor!
In the future, Joseph wishes to complete a Higher Rights Course, which will enable him to speak in senior courts in England and Wales (much like a barrister) whilst undertaking his role as a criminal solicitor.
When asked what advice Joseph would give to prospective students, he said:
‘Although it is a cliché, put the work in and don’t give up. Despite not having amazing predicted grades, I had an excellent work ethic and secured the grades I needed to pursue the career I wanted. Don’t forget that when you finish university, life can get very serious very fast; so, take some time to relax and enjoy yourself!’
