Attendance & Student Support

Attendance = Achievement
At Winstanley we consider attendance = achievement and every lesson provides a valuable learning opportunity. Therefore we welcome parents’ support in ensuring students attend every lesson. We understand that sometimes attendance isn’t possible but it should only be in exceptional circumstances that a lesson is missed.
Teacher Attendance
The College will ensure that every effort is made to provide a learning experience at every scheduled lesson. Rarely, a teacher may not be in attendance for a particular reason, work will still be set for that period, registers taken and students should still attend. Similarly, study periods are study periods not free periods; it is an unusual student who has nothing to do at these times!
Notification of Absence
If a student misses is absent from college you should inform us of the reason for the absence. Each day of absence should be reported to the college. We may also try to contact you if we don’t hear from you to understand the problem and help get you back into college.
Family holidays should be planned very carefully and if at all possible not coincide with scheduled lessons. Be especially careful around exam times in January and May/June!
Attendance Monitoring
We monitor attendance very closely and if a student causes concern they may be placed on an attendance contract. If this happens you will be notified by text every time a lesson is missed so that you are kept fully aware of the situation. Students have an attendance portal which they can access at any time and see all the attendance marks they have gained as well as their % absence to date. If they feel any of these marks are inaccurate they should report this to their personal tutor.
