Throwback Thursday - Stephen Brockley (Director of External Relations at Winstanley College)
Back
For this week’s Throwback Thursday, we didn’t have to look far, as former student, Stephen Brockley, works here at College. Stephen began his career as a PE teacher before working his way up to Director of External Relations. Here he shares his story.
Stephen says: ‘I attended Lowton High School before joining Winstanley College in 1998. During my time at College, I studied Physical Education, Business Studies, Maths, Philosophy and Religion, and General Studies. As a keen footballer, I also played for the College First team for three seasons.
After leaving Winstanley in 2001, I pursued a degree in Sports Science at Loughborough University. Whilst there, I particularly enjoyed my role as Football Chairman in 2004, which gave me valuable experience in leading and organising a sports club.
I returned to Winstanley College in 2004 as a temporary PE teacher while completing my teaching qualification. I was fortunate to secure a full-time position and have had the privilege of working in the department for 21 years. Throughout this time, I have particularly enjoyed collaborating with colleagues and working with the many students who have studied PE or represented the College in sports teams.
In addition to my role as a PE teacher, I have undertaken several other responsibilities, including professional mentor, ITT coordinator, personal tutor, lead practitioner, head of General Studies, and course coordinator for the Extended Project Qualification.
In 2021, I was appointed Director of External Relations, overseeing marketing and recruitment. This role has allowed me to contribute to the rebranding of the College and assist students from across the North West with their transition to College life.
Recently, my teaching hours have been reduced as I have taken on a role within the internal inspection team, supporting the Deputy Principal."
When asked about his future aspirations, Stephen is aiming high with ambition to become Principal of Winstanley College.
For students considering Winstanley, he offered this advice:
"Visit all the colleges in your local area to speak with teachers and students. Attend events such as Open Evenings and Taster Days to get a sense of which college is the best fit for you."
Thank you Stephen, and here’s to many more successful years here at College.
