HE+ Launch at Winstanley College
BackWinstanley College recently welcomed 150 students to the launch of this year’s HE+ programme, delivered in partnership with Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. The introduction session provided a comprehensive overview of the HE+ project, outlining the opportunities and expectations involved, along with a timeline of key stages in the months ahead.
The event aimed to break down common misconceptions surrounding Oxbridge applications. A session titled ‘Demystifying Oxbridge Applications’ explored the application process in detail, helping students better understand what is involved. Current undergraduates then took part in a Q&A, answering questions on student life, finance, and what it’s like to study at Oxford and Cambridge.
A key focus of the day was super curricular activities – the importance of engaging with academic interests beyond the A-level syllabus. Students were introduced to ways they can deepen their subject knowledge and enhance their university applications through broader academic exploration.
The HE+ programme offers a range of academically enriching sessions designed to broaden knowledge in a chosen subject. Students will participate in online webinars and academic sessions throughout the year, developing essential skills for competitive university applications. Those who complete the programme will have the opportunity to attend a residential visit to Sidney Sussex College. This experience gives around 35 students the chance to stay at Cambridge, gain further insight into student life, and immerse themselves in the university environment.
As part of the programme, students are also tasked with creating an academic research poster, which can be submitted to the national HE+ competition. Shortlisted students will be invited to return to Cambridge after September for a final stage of the competition, with the potential to win national recognition for their work.
Universities widely recognise the HE+ project as a mark of active engagement in academic subjects beyond the A-level curriculum. Students who complete the programme will be well equipped with research and analytical skills that will strengthen personal statements, enhance interview discussions, and prepare them for Higher Education and beyond.
